As a drummer jazz band leader, I get to pick the musicians I want to play with. First musician for me is always the bass player. A drummer and a bass player must fit like a glove to do these great jazz standards. My good friend John Lamb is a world class bass player who in the 60`s played for years with Duke Ellington. He has played with every major jazz artist and singer from Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Louie Armstrong, Louie Bellson, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Connie Haines, Frank Sinatra and so many more. In his late 80`s, John Lamb has not slowed down. It`s an honor for me as a drummer to be working with a jazz legend like John Lamb. One of the all time great songs that Duke Ellington composed is Satin Doll. I get to do it with John Lamb doing his intro bass solo, Tony Castellano on piano, and Franco Marino on tenor sax. We just listen to each other to do our version of this great jazz standard. I tell a story about John Lamb as my intro about him of the many concerts we have played together. I have learned so much from this great man that will be with me forever. Playing this great jazz music with a part of jazz history like John Lamb is why I love being a band leader.
